Seven out of the 317 schoolgirls earlier abducted by bandits from Government Girls Junior Secondary School, Jangebe, Zamfara state have reportedly escaped from their captors.

According to Channels TV, a source at Jangebe town in Zamfara disclosed this on Friday evening.

The source claimed the girls escaped from the bandits while trekking along the forest.

According to him, more of the girls have escaped and were expected to have run out of the grip of bandits while trekking in the forests.

Earlier, the Zamfara Police Commissioner, CP Abutu Yaro, said the police and military have jointly launched a search and rescue operation for the 317 girls abducted.

Also, President Muhammadu Buhari in a statement released on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu said his government would ensure the safe return of the Jangebe captives, The New Diplomat earlier reported.

Buhari, who described the latest abduction as inhumane and totally unacceptable, also sent out strong warning to bandits and their sponsors.

He said his administration will not succumb to bandits who target innocent lives to get huge ransom payments.

The New Diplomat had reported that following the abduction, Governor Bello Matawalle has ordered the closure of all boarding schools in the state.
