A month after Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State recovered from COVID 19, his deputy, Baba Tela has also tested positive for the deadly disease.

This was confirmed by the result of the tests carried out on him by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC after he started showing symptoms of the disease.

According to a statement by Mukhtar Gidado, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Bala Muhammad on Tuesday, Tela, who is also the Chairman of the State Task Force on COVID–19, contracted the virus while in the line of duty.

“This is to inform the General public that His Excellency Sen. Baba Tela, deputy governor of Bauchi State, who is also the Chairman, State Task Force on COVID-19, was confirmed positive of Coronavirus.

Consequently, Tela has gone into self-isolation in Bauchi, and health professionals are properly managing his situation.

Similarly, samples of all his primary contacts have been taken by the NCDC for test and they are advised to remain in isolation pending the outcome of their results,” the statement read.

Recall that Tela replaced the governor of the state, Bala Muhammad, as the Chairman of State Task Force on Covid-19 when the governor tested positive for the virus and became the index case in Bauchi State.

Recall also that the state governor was one of the governors who lifted lockdown for Ei-del-Fitri celebration in their states.

Nigeria currently has 10,819 COVID-19 cases, Bauchi state accounts for 241 of the cases.
