MTN Nigeria has confirmed that some of its subscribers are currently experiencing an outage, making it difficult for them to make or receive calls and use the internet.
In a statement released on Wednesday night, the telecom firm said that the outage was caused by multiple fiber cuts, affecting voice and data services.
While apologizing for the network downtime, the telecom firm stated that its engineers are diligently working to resolve the issue, with services gradually being restored in some areas.
“We apologise for the inconvenience and ask for your patience and understanding as the team works to restore full service as soon as possible,” the network provider stated.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stated that there is no going back on the February 28 deadline to bar subscribers of MTN, Globacom, Airtel, among others, whose SIM cards have not been linked to their National Identification Numbers (NIN).
Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, made this announcement at the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair. Dr. Maida, represented by Mr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs of the NCC, emphasized that it is mandatory for telecom subscribers to link their NIN to their SIM cards, citing national security concerns.
“To this end, the National Communication Commission has directed all telecommunication operators to bar phone lines of subscribers whose lines are not linked to their NINs on or before February 28, 2024,” he added.
