Nigeria’s Super Eagles revived their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a determined 2–1 victory over Lesotho on Friday, a much-needed result that keeps them in contention ahead of the final round of qualifiers.

After a cagey and goalless first half, captain William Troost-Ekong broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, converting a penalty awarded for a handball in the Lesotho box.

The Eagles doubled their advantage in the 80th minute through Akor Adams, who finished calmly after a fluid attacking move to make it 2–0. But just as Nigeria seemed to have sealed the win, Kalake pulled one back for Lesotho three minutes later, setting up a tense finale.

Despite late pressure from the visitors, the Super Eagles held on for the all-important away victory.

The result lifts Nigeria to 14 points, but they remain third in Group C after Benin Republic defeated their opponents to move up to 17 points, while South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe, taking their tally to 15 points.

With only one match remaining, the group remains finely poised, and Nigeria’s qualification hopes still depend on results elsewhere.

To stand a chance of booking their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, the Super Eagles must beat Benin Republic in their final game, while also hoping for slip-ups from both Benin and South Africa. Improving their goal difference could also prove decisive if the group finishes tight on points.
