Amid reports on cancer scare in noodles, the Director General of the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye has declared local noodles produced in Nigeria safe for consumption.

The DG who made the clarification at the Arise TV 9pm News on Wednesday, amid reports that noodles contain chemicals capable of causing cancer among consumers of the product, said only imported noodles are doubtful for consumption.

Mrs Adeyeye disclosed that noodles produced in Malaysia and Tiwan are cancer genic as they contained chemical that is inimical to human existence.

The DG said it was the affected countries that disclosed to the world that their noodles are are not healthy for consumption.

She said that armed with the information, NAFDAC begun its routine checks on approved noodle products in Nigeria.

The DG, however, stated that the federal government has embargoed the importation of noodles into Nigeria long before she was appointed to oversee the affairs of NAFDAC.

According to her, noodles have been in the prohibition list of Nigeria, and was not banned by NAFDAC, adding that the essence of government’s action was mainly to encourage local manufacturers of the product.

She enjoined Nigerians to look for locally manufactured noodles to consume.

Mrs Adeyeye however disclosed that the Agency is currently making investigations on all noodles manufactured in Nigeria as part of its routine checks on approved products.

The DG said she is working assiduously with the Head of the Agency’s Lab to conclude investigations on noodles manufactured in Nigeria to find out if they contained chemical that makes the product unfit for consumption.
