Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has broken his silence on Cristiano Ronaldo after they missed out on his signature.

The Premier League champions looked set to sign the former Real Madrid and Juventus player on Thursday, having offered him a two-year contract.

But rivals Manchester United swung in, using their history with the 36-year-old to convince the Ballon d’Or winner to make a return.

City were reportedly left ‘unhappy’ with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes for pushing to seal the Old Trafford return.

And Guardiola, who has also missed out on Lionel Messi and Harry Kane this summer, gave little away in his first interview about the club missing out on United’s returning star.

Speaking to BT Sport after his side’s 5-0 league thrashing of Arsenal, the Spaniard said: “I don’t think frustrated is the right word.

“We have an exceptional squad and we have improved to have the best possible team to compete.

“It’s good that a player like Cristiano Ronaldo is back in England for the Premier League and it’s good news.”
