History was made recently when a 33-year- old lady, Tracy Chapele-Ugo, popularly known as Suo, was conferred with a chieftaincy title in Udu Kingdom, Urhobo, Delta State.

For over 100 years, a woman has never been conferred such prestigious title in Udu kingdom as it was traditionally reserved for men.

However, the record was broken as Suo was conferred as the Okugbe 2 of Udu Kingdom.

The young lady, who could not hide her joy, took to her social media page to share the good news.

According to her, the chieftaincy title was conferred on her late father and for the past 100 years, the Kings in Urhobo land never gave the chieftaincy title of a deceased chief to his daughters.

“In almost 100 years, Urhobo Kings don’t give a Father’s Chieftaincy title to his daughter esp when there are sons. Today my family/People/Elders/Ovie found me worthy. Daddy’s Chieftaincy title has been transferred to me.

Chief Suo Chapel; Okugbe 2 of Udu Kingdom #Oghenemigwo,” she tweeted.

Also speaking during an interview with BBC, Suo said she was motivated to contest for the position following the reluctance of her brothers.

According to her, following their father’s demise in October 2020, a family meeting was summoned to deliberate on the person to succeed him.
However, months after the meeting, her brothers refused to show interest in the title, which prompted her to declare her interest in the title.

She added that after she declared her interest, everyone in the community, including the king and the chiefs, supported her.
