Nigeria’s Former Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has scaled through the first hurdle of screening in the race for Director-General of the World Trade Organization(WTO).

By this development, she is still in the race of becoming the next Director-General World Trade Organisation (WTO) even after the international body on Friday pruned down the number of candidates to five through elimination process that has seen others dropped off from the highly contested race.

According to Agency reports, Mexico’s Jesus Seade, Egypt’s Mamdouh and Moldova’s Tudor Ulianovschi failed to secure enough support base among voters to proceed to the next stage of screening and voting.

This leaves the following in the tight race: Kenya’s serving Minister and former chair of WTO Ministerial Conference, Dr Amina Mohammed, Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, South Korea’s Trade Minister, Yoo Myung, Saudi Arabia’s Mahommed Al-Tuvangar abd UK’s former Minister Liam Fox.

By this development, the second round of voting is scheduled for September 24 and it would run through to October 6. This is expected to be followed through to November 7, when the final candidate that emerges as the DG of WTO would be announced.
