The mega rally organised by a group, NEW Associates, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, was momentarily suspended as sounds of sporadic gunshots rent the air.

There was also palpable tension at the venue of the rally as participants scamper to safety.

The rally is being organized by the group coordinated by George Turnah, a stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the state.

The rally was ongoing when sounds of gunshots blazed across the area.

Normalcy has however been restored.

Addressing journalists after the shooting, Secretary of the NEW Associates in Bayelsa State, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, said the rally must go on.

Meanwhile, NEW Associates supporters have regrouped to continue the rally.

Though no statement has been made by the organisers of the event as of press report, there are speculations that the incident may have been masterminded by supporters of politicians who are not favourably disposed to Wike’s presence in the state.
