The Senate on Thursday announced its decision to embark on a thorough investigation into the recent demolitions that have taken place in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In response to the growing concerns and outcry from affected residents, the Red Chamber has established an investigative committee tasked with delving deeply into the circumstances surrounding these demolitions.

This committee is set to invite the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, to provide detailed explanations regarding the rationale behind these actions.

The development came after a motion moved by Senator Ireti Kingibe, the lawmaker representing the FCT Senatorial District at the Senate.

Kingibe, in her lead debate, claimed that many residents in FCT have been left homeless as a result of the demolitions.

Kingibe also urged the Senate to immediately wade in and call for an immediate stop to further demolitions.

Following her motion, the Senate resolved to set up an investigative committee to look into the demolitions and report back to it within a specified timeframe.

It would be recalled that Wike recently intensified the demolition of illegal structures and shanties in the nation’s capital.

Wike had explained that he ordered the demolition of structures constructed on Abuja’s green areas.

Wike said his administration would not be swayed by blackmail and protests and vowed to continue the demolition of all shanties which he claimed are posing security threat to residents.
