February 9, 2025, marked the first anniversary of the tragic passing of the late Access Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Herbert Wigwe, alongside his wife Chizoba and son Chizi, with notable Nigerians paying tributes to the departed.
Tributes poured in as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, and Access Bank, among a host of others, reflected on Wigwe’s impact not only on the Nigerian financial sector but also on broader societal and humanitarian initiatives.
Tinubu, in his tribute, described Wigwe as a “shining star” whose contributions to youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and philanthropy would continue to illuminate Nigeria’s path forward.
Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, at the one-year remembrance service for Wigwe, which was held in Lagos on Sunday, said the late business sage built institutions.
Edun stated: “Wigwe was more than a banker. He was a builder – of institutions, of dreams and people.
“But even in our grief, we find solace in the enduring legacy of his work, his values, and the institutions he built. His story reminds us that vision, hard work, and service to humanity are measures of true greatness.”
Obasanjo, in his tributes, said Wigwe’s death has “left an indelible void in our hearts and our nation’s financial landscape”.
“Whenever I come across Access Bank today, memories of Herbert Wigwe come flooding,” the former president added.
Sanwo-Olu, in a heartfelt message, stated: “A year ago, the world as we knew it changed forever. In an instant, we lost a man whose presence was larger than life.
“He, especially believed in our work here in Lagos State. Herbert travelled the world with us, helping my government to mobilise partners and funding.
“Lagos State has felt his absence very strongly in the last year, and people in this room know truly what I am talking about. Some projects would no doubt have moved faster today. Of course, Herbert being around would have pushed them forward.”
Also, as the institution where Wigwe made his mark, Access Bank honoured him with a heartfelt post on social media, reflecting on the void left by his absence and the enduring legacy he built. The bank highlighted how Wigwe’s principles and vision continue to guide their operations and inspire their staff.
It would be recalled that Wigwe tragically died in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024, in California, USA. Alongside him, his wife Chizoba, their son Chizi, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), were also killed in the accident. The crash occurred near Halloran Springs, involving an Airbus Helicopter EC 130B4.
