The Federal Government of Nigeria was able to avert a diplomatic row with Togo over an alleged maltreatment of some Nigerians last weekend.
A video had gone viral on Saturday where some Nigerians were seen being assaulted by some Togolese security agents.
It was gathered that a group of Nigerians coming from the United States with Ethiopian Airline had a connecting flight that took them through Gnasingbe Eyadema International Airport, Togo on Saturday, December 18.
However, after getting confirmed flights from the USA, the Nigerians who were travelling from US were told that their connecting flight was full and that they could not continue with the trip. This got them angry, leading to an argument which later generated into a scuffle between them and the security agents.
The video showed some Togolese security agents holding two men and a woman on the floor in an attempt to arrest them.
However, it took the intervention of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama and the Ambassador of Nigeria to Togo, Mr Debo Adesina, before the heated argument was settled.
Onyeama was said to have contacted Adesina from Turkey where he was attending the third Turkey-Nigeria Partnership Summit as a member of President Muhammadu Buhari’s delegation. The minister was said to have instructed Adesina to immediately take charge of the situation and ensure that the Nigerians get to the country.
It was gathered that Adesina secured an undisclosed charter aircraft to airlift the Nigerians to Lagos.
