The Lagos State House of Assembly has abruptly terminated Mudashiru Obasa’s decade-long reign as its speaker.

This is as the legislators reportedly impeached Mudashiru Obasa as speaker and subsequently elected Mojisola Meranda, representating Apapa I, as his eplacement.

Meranda would serve as the first female speaker of the Lagos legislature.

Obasa has reportedly been nursing the dream of taking over from the incumbent Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu when his tenure ends in 2027.

Though the impeached speaker has not publicly announced his intention to contest the number one political seat in Lagos State, he recently hinted at the possibility of throwing his hat in the rings.

Reacting to the rumour of his governorship ambition, Obasa said he had not decided yet stressing, however, that he “has the competence and exposure” to join the political fray for the governorship election.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu’s son, Seyi, has been speculated in some quarters as some who is likely to throw his hat in the ring as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s successor.

While, there are no reports yet as to why Obasa was impeached the development may not be unconnected to the possibility of his ambition standing in the way of bigger political interests.
