Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has tested positive for COVID-19 in the build-up to next month’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon that commences in 10 days time.

This was announced today, Thursday, December 30 in a statement by the club Napoli.

The Nigerian striker at about this time last year also tested positive for the same virus after reportedly attending a party.

Recall, Osimhen is just returning to his base for a scheduled medical check-up meant to ascertain his full recovery from a nasty injury suffered in November.

The Napoli statement read:“Napoli has announced that Victor Osimhen has tested positive for Covid-19 but is asymptomatic. Dr. Tartaro was due to perform a check-up on the player tomorrow.

“Consequently, the local authorities have ordered that Osimhen self-isolate and the check-up will be rescheduled after he has tested negative and his period of isolation ends.”

Osimhen, who recently celebrated his 23rd birthday, has been included in the Nigeria 28-man squad list for the Africa Cup of Nations starting in less than 10 days.

The gangling striker had been ruled out for three months, but he started individual training early in December faster than anticipated and was once pictured after a session with a teammate.

A specially designed face mask was also provided for the Super Eagles striker to aid his integration into group training and green light from doctors would have laid to rest the uncertainties around his participation at the 2021 AFCON.
