President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, as the acting Inspector-General of Police.

Baba replaces Mohammed Adamu whose tenure was extended by 3 months in February by the President.

Recall the president had on February 4, 2021, extended the tenure of Adamu as the Inspector General of Police for 3 months amid public criticism and legal action taken against the tenure elongation.

However, in the wake of the massive jailbreak that occurred in Imo state, Monday, Adamu, often described as a perfect gentleman of the force by admirers, was on an official assignment in Owerri, the state capital when his sack statement was being read inside Aso Rock, Abuja.

Announcing the change, Tuesday, Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi said Usman’s appointment was with immediate effect.

Below is a quick reality check on the new police boss:

  1. The new IGP Usman Alkali Baba was born on March 1, 1963.

  2. He was enlisted into the Nigeria Police on March 15, 1988.

  3. Mr Baba obtained a Bachelor of Arts (ED) degree in Political Science from the University of Maiduguri.

  4. He holds a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State 1997 as well as Professional Courses/Workshop Institution.

  5. He hails from Geidam in Yobe state and has had meritorious years in the force.

  6. The senior police officer is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

  7. Alkali was a member of Course 22/2014 of the National Defence College (NDC).

  8. Before his appointment, Alkali Baba had served as the head of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID).

  9. Alkali was in FCT as the Deputy Commissioner, Investigation, and was also at the staff college as a directing staff. DIG Baba also has held several strategic positions in the past.

Chief among them are: Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone-5 Benin, Zone-4 Makurdi, Zone-7 Abuja, Commissioner of Police FCT and Delta Commands, Force Secretary, among others.

  1. He holds a Teacher’s Grade II Certificate (TC II) from Teachers College, Potiskum, Yobe State in 1980.

  2. He served as Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Yola, Gombe, Kaduna and Jos.

  3. He also served in Ilorin, Kwara State as Area Commander, second-in-command in Ebonyi State and Assistant Commissioner, CID, in Kaduna.

  4. He became a commissioner of police in January 2014 and AIG in July 2016.

  5. The acting IGP is due for retirement in 2023.
