There is huge uncertainty in the education sector of the country as the National Executive Committee (NEC), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ended its meeting.

The NEC on Monday met at Abuja over the payment of half salaries to its members. The NEC is expected to make a resolution on whether to embark on another strike action following the payment of half salaries to members by the federal government.

With the conclusion of the meeting, inside details of the parley remains sketchy as the president of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke was yet to disclose the outcome.

A member of the NEC anonymously disclosed that the union has resolved to give FG more time.

According to the source, the NEC agreed to wait for the outcome of the intervention of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila in its faceoff with the Federal government.

The source also disclosed that the NEC gave Gbajabiamila at least two weeks to intervene in the matter and resolve the issue of ‘No Work, No Pay policy.’

“We are considering students who have already returned to the campuses. We resolved to give them more time to do the needful. I believe ASUU President should tell you more”, the source was quoted to have said.

It would be recalled that Gbajabiamila, in a statement issued on Monday, called for calm.

He assured that President Muhammadu Buhari had indicated interest to wade into the latest concerns raised by the union, adding that the president remains committed to resolving all outstanding issues with ASUU.

Gbajabiamila also said the executive and the House of Reps had worked to address the issues that led to the strike, adding that the House is currently working on the 2023 Appropriation Bill.
