Contrary to reports circulating, the Imo state Police Command has said Uche Nwosu, a son-in-law to a former governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, is in its custody.
Earlier on Sunday, report has it that Nwosu was whisked away by some unidentified armed while attending a church service at his hometown, Eziama Obieri in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo state.
According to the reports, the gunmen who stormed St Peter’s Anglican Church where Nwosu and the rest of his family members were, operated in an Armoured Personnel Carrier and Hilux vans. The armed men were said to have shot indiscriminately before whisking away Nwosu.
But the Imo State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Michael Abattam, said Nwosu was arrested by the operatives of the command and not abducted.
The PPRO said Nwosu is in the police’s custody and has been interrogated over some allegations against him.
In his words, “Nwosu was arrested by the police, not kidnapped as insinuated in the social media.”
Abattam said it was in connection with “a case that is under investigation.”
Although the PPRO failed to disclosed the reason Nwosu is being interrogated it might not be unconnected with the rift between Okorocha and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state.
Recall that Uzodinma and Okorocha have clashed several times this year over various issues, mostly on properties. The governor was said to have petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) several times to investigate his predecessor over corruption allegations.
Uzodinma and Okorocha have been at loggerheads over the ownership of the Spring Palm Estate in Owerri, Imo State.
While Okorocha had claimed that the property belonged to him and his family members, the Imo State Government sealed the estate, claiming that the property is government owned.
Similarly, in November, Uzodinma accused Okorocha of forcefully taking lands from the residents of the state during his time as the governor of the state.
