A strong earthquake has occurred off the Southern coast of the U.S. state of Alaska.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) gave the magnitude as 8.2 and it occurred late on Wednesday evening 104 kilometres South-East of the town of Perryville, located on a peninsula, at a depth of 32 kilometres.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a tsunami warning.

It initially spoke of a magnitude of 8.1, then also corrected to 8.2, but located the quake just under 121 kilometres South-East of the town of Chignik, also located on the peninsula.

There were initially no indications of casualties or significant damage.

Alaska is a very sparsely populated region of the U.S. (dpa/NAN)
