United States President Donald Trump has agreed to pause tariffs on Canadian goods for 30 days.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the development came after what he described as “fruitful discussions” with Trump on Monday.
“I just had a good call with President Trump,” Trudeau said on his official X handle.
He added that there are commitments to enhance border security and address drug trafficking issues.
Trudeau detailed that Canada would implement a $1.3 billion border plan, which includes reinforcing the border with new technology, personnel, and helicopters, alongside enhanced coordination with the US to combat the flow of fentanyl.
Additionally, the Canadian PM said his government is committed to appointing a “fentanyl czar,” listing drug cartels as terrorist entities, and launching a joint strike force with the US to tackle organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering.
This agreement comes a few hours after Mexico reached a similar deal with Trump’s administration.
