Nigerian missions abroad were thrown into a mourning state in the early hours of Thursday, December 15, as news of the demise of the country’s Ambassador to Spain, Demola Seriki, broke out.

The New Diplomat gathered that Seriki passed away in Madrid, Spain, the country of his assignment at the age of 63 years.

His demise was announced in a notice signed by his children on Thursday. The notice said that he died in the early hours of Thursday.

“It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude to Almighty Allah that we announce the loss of our much-loved and admired patriarch, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, His Excellency, Ambassador Demola Seriki, on December 15, 2022.

“He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Madrid, Spain,” the notice said.

The New Diplomat reports that Seriki was born on November 30, 1959. He was a politician, teacher, businessman, and public administrator. He served until his death as the Nigerian ambassador to Spain, a position he assumed in January 2021, with concurrent accreditation as a permanent representative of Nigeria to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.

Before his appointment as envoy, Seriki had served in several capacities. Between 2009 and March 2010, he was the minister of state for interior.

He was also the minister of state for defence from 2008 to 2009.
