The Canadian police have arrested a Nigerian -Canadian woman, Amaka Patience Sunnberger, for allegedly threatening to poison Yoruba and Benin people in a video that went viral. The Toronto Police Service confirmed the arrest in a statement on their website, announcing that the suspect will face court proceedings on Monday, September 2, 2024.
The incident began on August 25, 2024, when Sunnberger, who resides in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, posted a video online threatening to poison specific members of the Nigerian community by poisoning their food and water at her workplace. Speaking in Pidgin English, she expressed her hatred towards the Yoruba and Benin people specifically, vowing to use various poisons, including rat poison and other lethal substances.
Following the video’s circulation, people reacted variously.The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, took swift action. Dabiri-Erewa petitioned Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, urging Canadian authorities to address the threat.
It would be recalled that on Sunday, September 1, 2024, the Toronto police reportedly quizzed Sunnberger, 46, and charged her with “uttering threats.” The Toronto Police in a statement emphasized that the case is being investigated as a hate-motivated crime. According to the Police, Sunnberger is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 2201 Finch Avenue West on September 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
