President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his support for the establishment of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative led by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Tinubu emphasized that this alliance is crucial in the ongoing global struggle to eradicate hunger and alleviate poverty.

He highlighted the importance of collective action in tackling these pressing issues that affect millions around the world.

The Nigerian President made this known during his address on Monday at the 19th G20 Leaders Summit opening session in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In his remarks, Tinubu underscored the importance of Nigeria’s endorsement of the declaration of commitment to join the Global Alliance. He characterized this decision as a crucial milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against hunger and poverty.

He also pointed out that by actively supporting this initiative, Nigeria is reaffirming its steadfast commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He particularly highlighted the relevance of SDG 1, which is centred on eradicating poverty, and SDG 2, which strives for the ambitious goal of eliminating hunger.

The president was quoted as saying: “This bold and visionary step underscores Brazil’s leadership in addressing one of the most urgent and persistent challenges facing our world today.

“The creation of this Alliance marks a significant milestone in our global efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty, and it also sends a powerful message of solidarity to vulnerable populations around the globe.

“By fostering collaboration between governments, international organisations, and civil society, this initiative offers a comprehensive approach not only to addressing immediate needs but also tackling the structural causes of hunger and poverty.

“These goals are at the core of Nigeria’s development agenda, and the Alliance offers a platform to accelerate progress towards them.

“By collaborating with international partners, Nigeria aims to leverage best practices, innovative solutions, and financial support to enhance its efforts to combat poverty and hunger. The endorsement reinforces Nigeria’s role as a key player in global efforts to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all its citizens.”

It would be recalled that Tinubu on Sunday jetted out of Nigeria to Brazil to attend the G20 Summit scheduled for November 18 and November 19.
