The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s transformative policies are geared towards correcting the errors of the past, placing the country on the path to becoming an economic superpower.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, while unveiling the activities planned for the 64th Independence Anniversary.
Idris said: “Under the visionary leadership of President Tinubu, we have initiated transformative policies and reforms aimed at correcting the missteps of the past and repositioning Nigeria as an economic superpower shortly. Despite global economic headwinds and the transitional pains accompanying some of the reforms, the President has remained focused in his efforts towards reviving our economy and returning the country to the path of prosperity and sustainable growth.”
According to the minister, one of the key setbacks to rural socio-economic development has been the lack of fiscal autonomy at the local government level.
He added: “President Tinubu has taken a decisive step towards implementing local government autonomy by seeking a Supreme Court ruling, demonstrating his commitment to a deep-rooted restructuring of the country.”
It would be recalled that President Tinubu’s administration has been pushing for reforms in the oil and gas sector, fiscal decentralization, and a gradual transition to alternative energy sources, among others.
In his speech, Idris further highlighted reforms aimed at ensuring macroeconomic stability, stabilizing the foreign exchange regime, and overhauling the tax system.
He said: “The administration is reducing the burden on Nigerians and repositioning our oil and gas sector to attract new investment. The removal of the petroleum subsidy is gradually guiding Nigeria into an unprecedented energy transition phase.”
Idris also mentioned that the President had launched an initiative to shift from fossil fuels to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles and machinery, which has already reduced transportation costs by up to 60%.
Idris concluded by commending Nigerians for their patience,
stating: “Surely, there is light at the end of the tunnel as our sacrifices will not be in vain.”
