In a significant diplomatic gesture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has bestowed the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) upon Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This honour was conferred during a bilateral meeting held at the presidential villa in Aso Rock, Abuja, on Sunday.

Speaking during the meeting, Tinubu said the decision is to express Nigeria’s appreciation to India for partnering with the country over the years.

Tinubu said: “The honour is to signify our appreciation of India as Nigeria’s partner.

“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries.

“You represent a very strong commitment to democratic values and norms; you have been doing a good job historically, winning three consecutive elections in a complex society. That is a feat that we respect so much.

“I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.

“This to signify Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner.”

The New Diplomat reports that Modi had arrived in Abuja in the late hours of Saturday. He was welcomed with the Indian anthem. Thereafter, a guard of honour, mounted by the brigade of guards, rendered the Nigerian anthem and led the prime minister on an inspection of the parade.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the presidency confirmed that Tinubu and Modi are expected to discuss and sign bilateral agreements during their meeting.
