President Tinubu has denied stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from registering new political parties.

The president spoke while addressing members of the National Assembly on Democracy Day.

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has never been asked to do so under his administration.

He said, “I have never stopped the registration of any political party.”

Tinubu also denied allegations of attempting to make Nigeria a one-party system.

Recall that some members of the emerging coalition party have accused INEC of deliberately refusing to register new political parties, alleging that the commission’s position is at Tinubu’s behest.

According to the coalition proponents, the rationale behind Tinubu’s purported action is to prevent the emergence of a strong political movement on an entirely new platform after allegedly infiltrating and weakening the existing opposition parties.
