Several Iranian citizens have stormed the streets of Tabriz to pay their last respects to their late President, Ebrahim Raisi who was confirmed dead on Monday.

The funeral procession for Raisi kicked off on Tuesday at Tabriz, the closest major city to the crash site.

The funeral procession will continue on Wednesday. The procession on Wednesday will be held in the capital, Tehran, and funerals will be held in two more cities on Thursday. Raisi is expected to be laid to rest in the holy city of Mashhad on Friday.

It would be recalled that the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared five days of national mourning for Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six others killed in the helicopter crash in a remote part of northwest Iran on Sunday.

The accident was said to have occurred due to foggy weather on Sunday.

In a swift move, Iran’s first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, was named as the interim president ahead of an election expected to take place in the next 50 days.
