As the 2023 general election approaches, some prominent Nigerians have joined forces together to create a new political party codenamed Rescue Nigeria Project (RNP).

According to the founding members, the creation of the party is to give Nigerians an alternative platform apart from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who have been in power since 1999.

Among the founding members are; former INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega; former Governor of Kwara State, Ahmed Abdulfatai; former Governor of Cross River state, Donald Duke, Prof. Pat Utomi; Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Senator Lee Maeba; among others.

In his remarks, Abdulfatai, who was elected as the governor of Kwara under the platform of PDP, lamented the state of the country.

According to him, Nigeria has failed to live up to the expectations of the founding fathers who fought for the independence of the country.

He noted that the need to create a new project which will secure the country and provide solutions was what prompted him and others to join heads to create a credible platform for Nigerians.

In his words, “It is based on this that we decided to set up this Rescue Nigeria Project. We want to salvage this country and see how we can fix the mess. We want to set a template and key criteria leaders must have before they can attain any political position.

“Despite the great opportunities of the past, Nigeria has failed to live up to the dreams of its founding fathers and the hopes of successive generations of its citizens.

“Perhaps, at no other time have these failings become more apparent than in the past decade or so.

“In 2015, Nigerians overwhelmingly embraced the promise of change. These hopes have not only been dashed, but they have arguably turned out to be the worst political statements ever to be made in this country. Nigeria today appears set to fulfill all the prophesies of doom.”
