It appears a wedge has been driven into the rosy relationship between former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his ally, the incumbent Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State.
This is as speculations become rife that the Kano State governor might have a cordial relationship with members of the New Nigerian National Party (NNPP) faction that suspended Kwankwaso.
There are insinuations that the sitting governor is trying to avoid a meeting or any grounds for conversation between his political godfather and himself.
The governor is said to have jetted out of the state, on Tuesday on hearing that Kwankwaso was in Kano State.
This happened a day after the governor had led a reconciliation between the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, and the aggrieved members of his constituency.
The meeting happened on Monday evening. However, despite the reconciliation, the party decided to suspend Bichi alongside the State Commissioner for Transportation, Muhammad Diggol, over alleged abuse of power and disloyalty to the party.
Reports have it that the governor had waited at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport for about two hours before taking off his flight en route to Abuja.
The governor reportedly left the state while Kwankwaso was in meetings with party loyalists, including the Speaker House of the State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, other political appointees and stakeholders from various Local Government Areas of the state.
The subject of the meeting was not made public as of press time. But when asked by journalists to comment on the crisis rocking the NNPP, Kwankwaso said he had nothing to say, referring them to the party chairman.
There have been concerns as a group of party loyalists and members of opposition parties have been clamouring for what they described as “freedom” for Governor Yusuf from the alleged shackles of Kwankwaso, who has been accused of ruling the state by proxy.
The group alleged that Kwankwaso has been in control of the state of affairs, dictating whatever would be done in the administration.
Through radio and social media campaign, the group asked Kwankwaso to allow the governor exercise his powers as Chief Executive of the state.
To make matter worse for the NNPP leader, Kwankwaso, another group led by one Gilbert Agbo had announced his alleged suspension from the NNPP.
The Agbo-led group claimed that the presence of Kwankwaso is a threat to the party.
