Residents and commuters had their nerves jangled on Wednesday as gas leakage was reported in the Computer village near Oba Akan area of Lagos, Wednesday.

Ikeja bridge, Anifowose Street and Medical Road, were among areas affected by the gas leakage said to have been caused by the ongoing road rehabilitation works in Ikeja.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson, southwest command, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, in a statement said the agency received distress call from residents of Oba Akran area concerning the gas leakage.

Farinloye also appealed to the residents of the affected areas to avoid using anything inflammable.

The statement reads: “Residents around Computer Village, Underbridge Awolowo Way, and Oba Akran axis, Anifowose Street, Medical Road must not open shops or use open naked fire for safety reasons.

“Distressed alert just received indicates massive leakage of gas pipeline around these areas.”

The New Diplomat also learnt that efforts are currently ongoing to bring the gas leakage under control.

This incident also coming at the heels of a building collapse which occurred in Ikoyi area of Lagos state.

Recall that a 21-storey building in Ikoyi collapsed on Monday, with many trapped in the building.

As of press time, the death toll of the incident stands at 22 while scores of people still remain trapped in the building.
