Kano State is presently experiencing heightened tension following the directive issued by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the immediate arrest of the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.
The directive was issued on Saturday in a statement issued by Sanusi Tofa, Director General of Media and Publicity at the Government House in Kano.
In the statement, the governor accused the deposed Emir of violating the laws of the State and his directives.
The governor said Bayero was allegedly smuggled into Kano state in an attempt to usurp the throne, thereby creating tension in the state.
The statement reads in part: “The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the governor.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys,” the statement added.
The New Diplomat reports that the Kano state House of Assembly had passed a bill amending the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, which was previously employed by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the state to dethrone Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as the 14th Emir of Kano.
Upon signing the repealed Kano Emirates Council Law, Yusuf gave all the affected Emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand them over relevant government papers to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The governor also announced that Sanusi had been reinstated as the Emir of Kano.
The governor consequently issued a reappointment letter to Sanusi on Friday, and Sanusi led Jumat prayers at the Government House, Kano.
