A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The development comes amid escalating political tension over Yoon’s short-lived decision to impose martial law on December 3, 2024.

The development also marks a historic moment as Yoon becomes the first president in South Korea to face such an ordeal of warrant.

This announcement was made on Tuesday. Investigators working on the case said the warrant was issued after Yoon allegedly failed to appear for questioning on multiple occasions, with investigators probing allegations of insurrection and abuse of power.

“There is a concern that the individual may refuse to comply with the summons without justifiable reasons,” a Corruption Investigation Office official told reporters on Tuesday.

The New Diplomat reports that the political turmoil in South Korea has escalated, with both Yoon’s supporters and opponents gathering outside his residence in response to the court’s decision.

The situation has been complicated by the recent impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and the acting presidency of Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok as well as a recent deadly plane crash.
