Tension has begun to escalate in Edo State as persons suspected to be political thugs have reportedly taken over the secretariat of the Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

The Chairman of the Ordeo LGA, Tom Obaseki raised this alarm when he addressing a press conference, describing how thugs prevented him from resuming work at the Secretariat.

Obaseki who accused the said thugs of allegedly preventing him from accessing his office said the situation is fast deteriorating in the state.

He said the suspected thugs were purportedly armed with weapons and they took up strategic positions at the secretariat, chanting solidarity songs.

He added that it was the development that prevented him from resuming work despite the court judgment.

Obaseki stated: “I came here to continue my work as elected chairman of Oredo Local Government. I met a whole lot of thugs who have already overtaken the council.

“This is a very disturbing trend. We are calling on the security agencies to arrest the situation. What is important is that we have a restraining order.”

It would be recalled that the 18 council chairmen and their deputies were suspended by the Edo State House of Assembly following a petition by Governor Monday Okpebholo in which he accused them of alleged insubordination and gross misconduct.

However, the Edo State High Court, in a ruling last Friday, nullified the suspension.
