In its bid to mitigate the events of flooding in some high-risk states in Nigeria, the Federal Government has begun the implementation of possible initiatives.

Professor Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, made this known to newsmen on Thursday, while explaining that the country might experience flooding soon.

The Minister believed that Nigeria’s closeness to the River Niger Basin makes it vulnerable to spillover from the upper catchment.

Prof Utsev however highlighted that the country has embarked on a number of preventive initiatives which are meant to cushion flooding incidents in high-risk states such as Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, Taraba, FCT.

According to the Minister, the stabilization of water flow at Wuroboki is one step to solution. He assured Nigerians that efforts to fill the Lagdo dam for the generation of hydropower by operators were ongoing.

He also stated that, in order to ensure that the outflow of water is held down at the Lagdo dam, the Federal Government has almost completed the construction of buffer dams.

Recall that the New Diplomat had reported that the rising cases of death in Cholera-infected areas was the result of many factors.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation therefore advised that all members of the public support the Federal Government to ensure the prevention of ugly flooding.
