A suspect in the killing of conservative activist in the United States, Charlie Kirk is now in custody after allegedly confessing to his father that he carried out the shooting, CNN reported a while ago.

According to CNN, the man’s father informed authorities of the confession and kept his son secured until police formally detained him.

President Donald Trump also confirmed Friday that “with a high degree of certainty” the individual in custody is the suspected shooter, CNN reported.

Authorities have released surveillance footage showing the suspect fleeing the scene. Another video obtained by CNN shows a man matching the description walking near the crime scene shortly before the attack.

Former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker said the investigation will now shift from manhunt to prosecution. He noted that investigators will interrogate the suspect, collect forensic evidence, execute search warrants, and examine electronic devices as they build a murder case, according to CNN.

State and federal officials are scheduled to hold a joint press conference today to provide further updates.
