The Liberal Party’s candidate, Mark Carney, has been declared victory in Canadian federal elections.

This comes after Carney has been projected to win against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

In his acceptance speech, Carney appreciated Canadians for voting for him. He also warned Canadians that the United States wants Canada’s land and resources, promising to fight back against US President Donald Trump’s trade war and threats of annexation.

As results poured in, world leaders swiftly extended congratulations, praising Carney’s leadership and emphasizing strengthened bilateral ties amid global uncertainties.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was among the first to congratulate Carney, highlighting their shared commitment to deepening UK-Canada relations.

“I welcome your leadership on international issues, and I know we will continue to work closely on defence, security, trade and investment,” Starmer said in a statement.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, has also felicitated with Carney on his “election as the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory”.

In a statement on social media, Modi, who has been prime minister since 2014, said, “India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties.”

He added he looked forward to working with Carney “to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people”.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, facing his own election soon, congratulated Carney on social media.

“In a time of global uncertainty, I look forward to continuing to work with you to build on the enduring friendship between our nations, in the shared interests of all our citizens,” he said.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, also congratulated Carney.

“The bond between Europe and Canada is strong – and growing stronger,” she said. “We’ll defend our shared democratic values, promote multilateralism, and champion free and fair trade.”
