In a dramatic turn of events the Parliament of South Korea has voted to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol as the president of the country.

The impeachment came after Yoon refused to resign over his short-lived martial law attempt.

The New Diplomat reports that Yoon is the second conservative president in a row to be impeached in South Korea.

Park Geun-hye was removed from office in 2017. It also comes after Yoon survived a first impeachment vote last weekend.

Following the development, Yoon said although he would step down from office but that battle will still continue.

Yoon said: “Although I am stopping for now, the journey I have walked with the people over the past two and a half years toward the future must never come to a halt. I will never give up.”

The country’s Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who will serve as acting president under South Korean law, told reporters that he would “devote all my strength and effort to the stable operation of state affairs.”

The dramatic decision comes after an intense political confrontation, during which Yoon declared martial law on December 3. In a striking scene, soldiers were deployed to parliament, attempting to obstruct lawmakers who bravely pushed through the barricade of troops to enter the building and vote down the controversial decree.
