Major markets and streets in several states in the South East were deserted on Tuesday as residents observed a sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra and MASSOB to mark Biafra Day.

In Enugu, residents, especially traders complied with the order, despite warnings by the Nigerian Police Force that the order was illegal and an infringement on fundamental rights.

Our correspondents observed that shops were locked and markets were closed with streets deserted. Security operatives were, however, seen patrolling the streets.

In Abia, there was partial compliance with the order as some banks offered services, with others closed. In some parts of the states, cautious residents could be seen gathered in small groups in street corners.

Today was set aside by the pro-Biafra groups to mourn Igbos who were killed in the civil war, 50 years ago.

In Owerri, the Imo State capital, schools, and markets including the Owerri Main Market, were closed. However, the state secretariat was open.

In Ebonyi State, there was very little compliance with the order as residents were seen going about their business.
