A former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Human Rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani has voiced concern over an alleged involvement of some influential political figures in the hoisting of Russian flag during the recent nationwide protests.

Sani claimed that the development is part of an alleged scheme aimed at unconstitutionally crippling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The New Diplomat reports that there have been concerns regarding the display of foreign flags in some states in the northern part of the country by certain EndBadGovernance protesters.

Video footage captured the protesters waving the Russian flag while echoing calls for military rule in Nigeria.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, the Department of State Services, DSS, and other security agencies are said to have effected several arrests of individuals involved in the issue .

Reacting to the development, Sani said it was an attempt by some elements to plot to cripple Tinubu’s government.

He said: “A day before the last protest, money was shared with the youths, and Russian flags were also shared.

“That shows that the whole intent of the protest is not simply about the policies and programmes of the government.

“There was an attempt to create an atmosphere where there would be an overthrow of the government.

“When you have this kind of situation, you will see that someone is writing a script for anarchy, lawlessness, and disorder. It is incumbent for someone like us to speak.”
