Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima departed Abuja on Sunday for New York, United States, as leader of the nation’s delegation at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
This comes after The New Diplomat had reported that Tinubu had delegated Shettima to represent him at the UNGA for the second time in a row.
Scheduled from September 22 to 28, 2025, this year’s high-level statements and events at UNGA marks the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter.
It is scheduled to draw over 150 world leaders, including monarchs, presidents, prime ministers, and vice presidents, for high-stakes discussions on pressing global challenges.
Shettima’s departure from Nigeria was confirmed by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), in a statement on Sunday.
In the statement, Nkwocha confirmed that Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s statement and join other dignitaries at the UN high-level general debates, among other side events.
Nkwocha added that the Vice President will attend a special event on Climate for Heads of State and Government to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on Wednesday.
The statement reads in part: “Shettima is also slated to attend the high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing to be hosted by the President of Kenya on September 24 and attend other bilateral meetings and events.
“After attending UNGA, the Vice President will leave for Frankfurt, Germany, where he is slated to meet with officials of the Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.”
