Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has berated the Kano State government for giving just N1million as a compensation to each of the families of the athletes who lost their lives while representing the state.

Sani’s remark was prompted by the decision of the Kano State government to donate a million naira each to the families of 22 athletes who lost their lives in a motor accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The government announced the decision on Saturday night.

However, in a post on X, Sani described the amount as insufficient and unbefitting, especially considering the fact that the athletes died while in active service to the state.

He added that Kano State is not in financial straits to be incapable of an amount more substantial to the deceased’s family.

“One million for each of the deceased athletes is not enough. Kano is rich enough to do more than that. The deceased died in active service,” the former lawmaker posted on Saturday.
