Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has revealed why he was seen in a trending video allegedly assaulting a police officer on duty yesterday.

Kuti in his reaction explained how the officer tried to kill him and his family members. According to him, the policeman had apologised and he had forgiven him.

His words are; “He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business, make the poor guy no lose him job.”

While reacting to Seun’s alleged assault, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a tweet said that It’s unfortunate that many Nigerians don’t have regard for constituted authorities and law enforcement agents, most especially the Nigeria Police Force(NPF.)

In the same vein, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, in a tweet said “a scion of late Afrobeat king, Fela Anikulapo Kuti over an altercation between a police contingent that rammed into him and his family on the 3rd Mainland bridge in Lagos.

“I am aware that seun kuti and his attorneys have agreed to help the police in an effort to unravel the circumstances that led to the altercations. It must be noted that while these conversations are ongoing for full cooperation with the police, officers of the
Police including the IGP must not engage in extra judicial action(s) like they are known for in settling disputes. Seun Kuti has agreed to cooperate fully with the police as soon as possible.”

Other Nigerians aired their views on Twitter;

Seun Kuti went too far! You cannot assault a police officer! That’s unacceptable & contemptible!

I am yet to see a police officer exhibit such level of calmness in the face of provocation!
That officer deserves commendation & promotion!

Assaulting a Police Officer is the height of it — a sham and disdain on the personality of Seun Kuti (who does he think he is ?) — Pls I support he faces the music of the law in its full course.

Just make police officers on duty proud, if officer’s can be dismissed for assaulting civilians, let’s wait and see what happens to civilians assaulting officers on duty, the test has begun.

I’m not in support of what Seun did tho.
But Why was this process swift ? I’m sure it won’t be this fast if it were the the other way round.

It would be recalled that the Inspector General of Poice, Usman Alkali Baba, yesterday, ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti following the later’s alleged assault of a serving Police officer.

The IGP in a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said; “Serious Assault on Police Officer: IGP Condemns Act, Orders Immediate Arrest of Seun Kuti.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.

“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.

“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”
