The Nigerian senate has declared Ebonyi South Senatorial and Yobe East Senatorial seats vacant and it has urged the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to commence the process of conducting bye-elections to fill the vacancies.

President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio made the declaration on Wednesday during Plenary.

Akpabio says the declaration is in accordance with section 68(1) (d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

Ebonyi’s South seat became vacant after the initial occupant David Umahi , the former Governor of Ebonyi state assumed office as Minister of works.

While Ibrahim Geidam , the former Governor of Yobe and senator who served in the 9th senate also took up a new role as Minister of Police affairs.
