The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The development came after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a letter transmitted and read by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, asked for the confirmation of Kekere-Ekun.
The New Diplomat reports that Kekere-Ekun appeared before the Senate on Wednesday.
She was accompanied by other Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Justices to the Senate Chamber on Wednesday.
During the interview, Justice Kekere-Ekun expressed her commitment to utilizing technology to expedite the administration of justice within the country.
Additionally, she emphasized her determination to stamp out corruption and criminal activities, affirming her dedication to upholding the independence of the judiciary from external influences.
After an exhaustive interview session and screening, the Senate confirmed her appointment as the CJN.
The New Diplomat also reports that Kekere-Ekun is the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second Nigerian female jurist to serve in that position.
The first female to occupy the exalted seat was Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who was the CJN between July 2012 and November 2014.
Kekere-Ekun was born on May 7, 1958, in London, United Kingdom. Her journey in the legal profession commenced at the University of Lagos where she obtained her first degree in law in 1980.
After she completed the Nigeria Law School, she was called to the Nigerian Bar on July 10, 1981.
