Yet another northerner, Haliru Nababa, was on Wednesday confirmed as the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) by the Senate.

President Muhammadu Buhari on February 18, 2021, nominated Nababa as the CG, NCoS, in line with provision of the new Act establishing the Nigerian Correctional Service 2019.

The Senate confirmation followed the presentation of the report of the Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Kashim Shettima, at plenary.

Nababa had appeared for screening before the Senate committee on Interior, last Wednesday.

Speaking at the screening exercise, Nababa called for an improved funding of the Correctional Service, which, according to him, will help renovate some correctional centres, purchase adequate arms and ammunition, among others.

Nababa is now set to succeed Jaafaru Ahmed who was CG from May 2016 to January 2021.

Nababa who hails from Sokoto State joined the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) in 1990, as an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons. He rose to the rank of Assistant Controller General of Corrections on January 1, 2018. He was later appointed as the Deputy Controller General of Corrections, covering duties in the Directorate of Finance and Accounts, on August 26, 2020.
