The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) as the substantive Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

His confirmation came after over two hours of questioning by senators, who pressed him on how he plans to restore credibility to Nigeria’s electoral process and implement meaningful reforms within the commission.

The confirmation, following a screening process, formalizes the appointment of the distinguished Professor of Law, who is set to lead the nation’s electoral body.

The confirmation comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Professor Amupitan, with the nomination receiving unanimous approval from the National Council of State last week.

Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, steps into the role previously held by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure concluded earlier this month.

Amupitan becomes the sixth substantive Chairman of INEC.
