Thursday, June 9 this year marked exactly one year that the 8th Senate of the 8th National Assembly was inaugurated. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in an address to the hallowed chamber congratulated his colleagues for scaling through a very challenging first 12 months. He commended the senators for their patriotism, support and hard work. However, The New Diplomat decided to gauge the performance of each of the 103 senators in the last one year. The assessment is based solely on the number of bills sponsored. The criterion of constituency projects is considered inapplicable now because of the long delay in the passage of the 2016 Budget. Out of the 103 senators, 73 have sponsored bills in the period under the review.
A check by this newspaper shows that Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, former Senate President David Mark and 27 others are among the ranking senators that fail to sponsor any bill within the period.
Senators who have no bills to their names in the period under review are Ahmed Sani Yarima (Zamfara), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), George Akume (Benue), Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Adamu Aliero (Kebbi), Jonah Jang (Plateau), Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe) and Godswill Akpabio (Akwa-Ibom). Others are Abu Ibrahim, Bayero Nafada, Jeremiah Useni, the spokesperson of the Senate Ali Sabi, Suleiman Hunkuyi, Muhammad Hassan, Abdul-Aziz Murtala Nyako and Ahmed Lawan.
The review showed that Senator Andy Uba led the chart with 13 bills, followed by Senator Biodun Olujimi and Senator Theodore Orji who had 11 bills respectively. They were followed by Senator Babajide Omoworare and Senator Dino Melaye who had 10 bills each.
The New Diplomat check also show that Senator Ben Murray-Bruce and Senator Philip Aduda sponsored nine bills each, Isa Hamma Misau has eight and Jibrin Barau seven. Others are senators Stella Oduah, Tijjani Kaura, David Umaru, Obinna Ogba, Sam Egwu, Ibrahim Gobir and Rose Oko with six bills each.
Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Senator Ali Ndume (Senate Leader), Rafiu Ibrahim Adebayo, Joshua Dariye, Robert Boroffice , Buhari Abdulfatai, Gilbert Nnaji, Kashamu Buruji sponsored five bills each.
Among senators that had four bills each are Lanre Tejuoso, Umaru Kurfi, Hope Uzodinma, Barnabas Gemade, Francis Alimikhena, Shaaba Lafiagi, Mathew Urhoghide, Duro Faseyi, Suleiman Nazif and Abdullahi Adamu.
Those that have sponsored three bills are Clifford Ordia, Dada Gbolahan, Shehu Sani, Oluremi Tinubu, Kabiru Gaya, Chukuwuka Utazi, Joshua Lidani, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, Ovie Omo-Agege and John Enoh.
Those who sponsored two bills are Aliyu Wamako, Bassey Akpan, Isiaka Adeleke, Emmanuel Bwacha, John Enoh, and Mallam Ali Wakili.
