Just one day after the expiration deadline for the use of old naira notes, the Central Bank of (CBN) has dismissed rumours that the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc(NSPM) lacked the capacity to print enough banknotes that would meet the nation’s demands.

This is against earlier reported assertion by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele that the printing company lacked the capacity to print enough new naira notes that would address the immense shortage of the new currency.

According to the report, the CBN Governor was said to have prevailed on President Mahmoud Buhari to give his assent to print the new naira notes in overseas country.
But the CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi in a release at the weekend, debunked the claim about the incapacity of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc.

The apex bank which also dispelled speculations of purported plans to shut down commercial banks in a Geo-political zone, said NSPM was only experiencing insufficient printing materials.

The release further clarified that the CBN Governor, told the National Council of State in a meeting at the presidential Villa at the weekend that NSPM was working assiduously on printing all denominations of the banknotes to assuage the suffering of Nigerians.

“While the CBN appreciates the concerns shown by all stakeholders about the distribution of the Naira, We are alarmed at the extent to which vested interests are attempting to manipulate facts and pitch the public against the bank, the CBN stated.

The CBN further declared that there was no such plan as the Claims against the bank were illogical and do not comply with the workings of the Nigerian banking system.
Against this backdrop, the CBN, however, urged the Nigerian public to ignore such recordings as they are against the policy thrust of the CBN.
