In a controversial development, President Paul Biya of Cameroon has purportedly indicated interest in seeking re-election as the President of Cameroon.
Biya, 91 years old, who is currently the longest-serving President of the country, is reportedly planning to start a campaign for his eighth term.
This was revealed by the founder of the Foreign Press Association Africa, Kennedy Wandera, on Thursday, who cited a report from News media, The Africa.
The report reads in part: “Cameroon is due to hold its next presidential election in 2025, longtime President Paul Biya will be 93. He has confirmed that he will contest.
“If he wins the election, and completes the new seven-year mandate, Biya will be 100 years old in 2032.”
According to the report, Biya’s decision to delay the election by a year (postponed from 2025 o 2026) is to allow him to contest despite his age. This development has angered the opposition in Cameroon.
The New Diplomat reports that Biya has been serving as the President of Cameroon for 42 years since 1982. He also served as the Prime Minister for 7 years from 1975 to 1982. before assuming the role of President.
