Wike’s Weak, Wild, Wicked Week

By Farooq A. Kperogi In Nigeria, elite oppression and callousness are often mostly abstract. Most people at the lower end of the social scale think and feel that many people in positions of power, comfortably ensconced in their sinecures, are haughty, self-impressed, and possessed of ice-cold disdain for them. But it is FCT Minister Nyesom…

[VIDEO] Obiano speaks from U.S., says ‘rumours of my death will only extend my life’ By Obinna Uballa Former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has personally debunked widespread rumours of his death, declaring in a video message on Friday that he is alive, well, and currently in the United States. In the short clip, which circulated on social media, Obiano – speaking in Igbo, dismissed the reports as false and mischievous. He said the rumour-mongers were only helping to prolong his life. “The truth is that I am in the United States. I am not in London, and I didn’t go to the hospital. We give God the glory. All the lies they are peddling is for them to extend my life. That is how it will be through Christ our Lord,” the former governor declared. His message came hours after his former Commissioner for Information, Mr C. Don Adinuba, also publicly refuted the claims, confirming that he had personally spoken with Obiano. Adinuba, in a statement on Friday, described the reports as baseless, stressing that the former governor is “hale and hearty” and very much alive. “Obiano has never lived in the United Kingdom. He lives in the United States of America. I just spoke with him now,” he said, urging members of the public to disregard the rumour. He warned that such unfounded claims were capable of causing unnecessary panic and distress to Obiano’s family, friends, and supporters across Anambra State and beyond. The former governor’s direct appearance and reassurance have effectively put to rest the speculation that had spread widely on social media earlier in the day.

Two weeks after he was sacked by the tribunal, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, has filed an appeal at the Makurdi Division of the Court of Appeal, Benue State, challenging the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal judgement that nullified his victory in the March 18, 2023 gubernatorial election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Governor Sule of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the election.

However, not satisfied with the result, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. David Ombugadu, approached the Nasarawa State Election Petition Tribunal to seek redress over alleged manipulations and malpractices.

The tribunal, via a virtual judgment delivered on October 2 2023, agreed with him and declared the PDP candidate, Mr. Ombugadu, as the authentic winner of the governorship election in the state.

The governor had immediately rejected the decision of the tribunal, insisting that his opponent’s petition lacked merit and ought to have been dismissed.

On Monday, Sule listed 27 grounds before the Makurdi Division of the Court of Appeal to fault the earlier decision of the Justice Ezekiel Ajayi-led tribunal delivered two weeks previously.

In a notice of appeal dated October 15, 2023, Sule urged the appellate court to set aside the decision of the lower court and affirm his victory as declared by INEC.

Joined in the appeal were Ombugadu, PDP, INEC and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as first, second, third and fourth respondents respectively.
