Rivers State was thrown into fresh political turmoil on Friday as Speaker of the House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and 15 other lawmakers formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Amaewhule announced the mass defection during plenary, declaring that the lawmakers were leaving the PDP due to what he called a “clear and irreconcilable division” within the party.
The dramatic switch instantly shifts the political balance in the state legislature and marks a major escalation in the long-running crisis that has pitted lawmakers aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
More details are expected as the political realignment unfolds.
